Wild Wisdom

This is by no means an extensive list - it only contains plants that grow on the farm. This is a passion project of mine and therefore a working list, as I am always learning more. It’s one of my favorite things about this job and I will be editing this page regularly.

I am also working on a list of reliable sources that will live in the Recommendations page from which this information was derived. I wholeheartedly believe in and feel confident in recommending these sources. I want to make sure I share reliable sources and give credit where credit is due.

Basil

Ocimum basilicum

Spiritual Meaning

Protection, Abundance, Self-love, Love

Essential Properties

The word "basil" is derived from "basileus" meaning "king" in Ancient Greek. It is thought that basil was once an ingredient in perfumes intended for royalty. It is sometimes referred to as "the Witch's herb", perhaps because it was used in Ancient Greece to detect Witches. Basil would be burned while speaking the name of the suspected Witch, and if basil "spoke" (i.e. crackled with the flame), then the Witch was confirmed.

Magic Properties

Basil encourages happy, easy love - a love that is free from squabbles - and makes a lovely gift for a newly married couple or as a housewarming gift. It is also a good gift for someone who just got a new job as basil is thought to invite wealth and prosperity.

Basil can work for self-love as well - it can help clear negativity and calm your spirit while attracting love and prosperity.

Keeping basil in the corners of your home is a powerful way to keep evil out. This can be accomplished with the plant itself in pots in each corner of your home, or with dried basil sprinkled in each corner. Anywhere you place your basil, it will exude a beautiful, loving energy.

Plant Wisdom

It is said that if you dream of basil's scent, then abundance is on its way. If you see basil in a dream, expect love to come your way or, if you already have love, it will amplify.

Borage

Borago officinalis

Spiritual Meaning

Courage, self-love, psychic ability

Essential Properties

Borage, with its blue, star-shaped flowers, is common throughout Europe and North America.

Roman soldiers thought that chewing the leaves of the borage plant would give you courage. For this reason, they used to eat borage leaves before battle.

Magic Properties

The anxiety-relieving properties clear the way for your psychic powers, allowing you to see clearly. Drinking a tea made of borage will help your intuition amplify. This is great to do before meditation. In voodoo traditions, decorating the home with borage blossoms or adding them to a floor wash will help ensure domestic harmony.

Plant Wisdom

Teaches self acceptance, to have the courage to stand in our light and power, and ignore the noise of the world that keeps us from listening to our true essence. Own your truth and rid yourself of any fears that are blocking you from shining like your true self. When you embrace all that borage has to offer, expect great changes moving forward!

Chamomile

Chamaemelum nobile

Spiritual Meaning

Peace, abundance, love, self-love, healing

Essential Properties

Chamomile has tiny, daisy-like flowers with a sweet, apple-like scent. Well known for its soothing affects, the sense of peace that chamomile provides invites us release and purify from whatever may be burdening us, from negative energy to the stress of every day life, to a headache or a cold.

Chamomile is great for the skin, relieving eczema and helping clear acne and evens skin tone.

Aides in digestion and can ease stomach cramps and menstrual pain.

Magic Properties

Taking a bath in water sprinkled with dried chamomile will invite love into your life. The same affect can be achieved by adding brewed chamomile tea to your bath - you may experience a feeling of bliss.

Great for relieving stress and anxiety, it can also alleviate overwhelm.

Plant Wisdom

Growing chamomile and setting intentions of healing into the seeds will bring a sense of self-love into your life, for as you care for it, you are in turn caring for yourself. Chamomile soothes the heart and sends healing love into the soul.

If you grow chamomile, set your intentions before watering her, intending abundance in wealth, love, or whatever your heart desires, then repeat those intentions as you gently water it.

It is believed that if you plant chamomile next to a struggling plant, the chamomile will help nurse it back to health. Much like trees are able to pass nutrients to struggling members of their forest, perhaps Chamomile has the ability to do the same.

The presence of echinacea can amplify the qualities of surrounding plants, both in nature and in cut bouquets. It can do the same when drinking a cup of echinacea tea while speaking your intentions. Daffodil

Narcissus

Spiritual Meaning

Luck, abundance, love

Essential Properties

Daffodils are the first heralds of spring and typically bloom around the Spring Equinox. It is said that finding wild daffodils indicates you’ve entered a sacred space.

Magic Properties

Daffodils speak of new life, new love, luck, and youthfulness. Planting daffodils so they greet you every spring is thought to bring a year of abundance.

Plant Wisdom

Daffodils teach us to be youthful, both mentally and spiritually. It is easy to forget how magical this world can be and how magical we are in our own existence. The re-emergence of life after a long, cold winter can help remind us of this magic, both within us and all around us.

Daffodils inspire us to be joyous, to never dim our inner light, and to look upon the world with a fresh perspective upon their emergence.

Folklore

Welsh folklore tells that the first person to find a daffodil in spring would go on to find gold in the coming months!

Dandelion

Taraxacum

Spiritual Meaning

Wishes, opening the door between realms, resilience

Essential Properties

Dandelion is very resilient - you may know this if you've ever tried to get rid of them! Adults may see them as a nuisance, however many people may remember blowing at a puff of dandelion seeds and making a wish as one of childhood's greatest pleasures.

Then there's the tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages: holding a dandelion flower under your chin and seeing if your face appears golden in its reflected light - if it does, you'll be rich some day!

Magic Properties

Drinking dandelion tea before bed can give you prophetic dreams. Keeping a dandelion in a locket or pressed in your wallet, book, or planner will help in keeping you focused and productive.

Plant Wisdom

Dreaming of dandelions symbolizes a breakthrough. When you see it in your dreams, know that Mother Nature is there to comfort and support you when you're going through big life changes and know that the dandelion's resilience will help see you through.

Folklore

Some folklore refers to dandelions as clocks because it is said that, by picking a dandelion seed head and blowing on it, the number of puffs it takes for all the seeds to fly off will reveal the hour of the day.

Dill

Anethum graveotens

Spiritual Meaning

Love, Manifesting, Protection, Abundance

Essential Properties

Dill, also known as dill weed, was thought to defend against witchcraft in the Middle Ages. Chewing dill leaves can make you more mentally alert, calm and upset stomach, and give you a boost of vitamins and minerals. Other uses include treatment of fever, colds, cough, bronchitis, infections, nerve pain, menstrual cramps, and sleep disorders. Dill seed can also be used to soothe a sore throat.

Magic Properties

Dill amplifies the energies of that which you desire. Placing dill by your windows will bring in abundance, success, and wealth. You can also use the seeds for protection by placing them for each side of your front door, around your back door if you have one, and by hanging a bunch of dill over your entryway. Keep dill in your pocket when going on a date, when going out into town, and when meeting new people to lift your energies of happiness, love, and attraction.

Plant Wisdom

Dill can help remind you of your power and inner magic, that you have no limitations, and help you release self-limiting beliefs. Dreaming of the scent or taste of dill is a symbol of love and prosperity.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus

Spiritual Meaning

Creativity, Clarity, Energy Clearing, Healing

Essential Properties

With over 400 different species, most native to Australia, Eucalyptus (also known as Tasmanian blue gum) gives off a strong, refreshing scent. The grow tall and fast.

Eucalyptus has amazing antimicrobial properties, acts as an insect repellent (very handy in the garden, I rub a few leaves on exposed skin while I work outside during the warmer months!), alleviates pain, and stimulates the immune system.

Magic Properties

Eucalyptus oil invites creativity and cleanses negative energy. Dab a few drops of oil or rub a couple fresh leaves on your wrists to deepen meditation.

Once dried, hang a bundle of eucalyptus from your shower head. Replace it once or twice a year to keep the energy flowing. The scent alone will send you into a peaceful, calming state for both body and mind.

Plant Wisdom

If you encounter eucalyptus in your dreams, it means you may have a spiritual block. Listen closely and work to clear whatever may be blocking you.
